This is a great application for Sia! Looking forward to see what more specs and what the units will cost.

Will this be like a plug and play kind of product. I'm not that tech savvy but love the idea.

yes. the idea of Minebox is that user dont even need to know that they are using cryptocurrency. it is plug-and-play, just use it as a regular NAS. free space is shared with the network and all relevant data is automatically backed up to sia.

The end user will be forced to know they are using a currency.

Why? You need at least 50k sia in your wallet to initialize contracts.

the box comes preloaded with enough sia for the user not to worry about. the first edition will be only fundable with cryptocurrency (through shapeshift) - but later editions will also have credit card integration.

the box is based on HP Proliant hardware. so dual-core celeron, 2xGbit lan, 4GB ECC Ram and 2x4TB Hard disks. price is not entirely fixed yet, somewhere slightly north of 600€.

Say I fill my Minebox entirely with data. What happens as the blockchain grows larger and there is not enough room left on the minebox to store it?

currently, the sia consesus DB is about 4 GB. The storage is 8 TB. so there is plenty of extra space.

Sia is planning to implement a light client, which Minebox will use, since we don't do mining on the device, only renting out space and utilizing sia for its backups.

Sorry if I explained myself incorrectly. It doesn't really matter how large the consensus DB is. ok, so it's 4 GB today. what i mean is imagine i fill my minebox with 7.96 TB of data. No matter how small or large the consensus db is, it will still bump against the rest of the data on the hard drive. Right? What happens then?

of course that problem is mitigated by a light client, but then you also become more vulnerable to attacks. at any rate there won't be a light client for something like a year if i'm not mistaken
