Gas fired boilers and steam turbines - the class was built in the mid to late 80s and had propulsion problems from the start.

This one was commissioned exactly 1 year before the Soviet Union collapsed - 25 December 1990. They moved it out of the Black Sea right before the Soviet Union collapsed in December 1991 so the Ukraine wouldn't seize it.

Did it's first operational cruise to the Med in 1996 and her evaporators failed and caused some boiler damage.

Six years of repairs and idleness passed before deploying out again.

It's supposed to get a new propulsion plant in a 2017 overhaul

oil burner carrier with notoriously faulty engines

Its engines are older and simply smoke a lot when changing speeds or at inefficient speeds. Cruising along it is significantly cleaner.

Why is the back of the ship blacked out?

Not entirely sure but it seems to be a theme on all RN ships. I think it looks pretty bad ass.

Hopefully someone can clarify for us.

It's to hide any grime from the exhaust, although as you can clearly see it's nowhere near the pollution factory that is the Kuznetsov
