Project Fi, One year later . . .Over $1200 in savings!

This month marks one year since I've been on project fi. I ran my numbers and have saved over $1200 in the past year since switching to Fi. Although, the cell service isn't 100% reliable, it sure beats having to pay $120 monthly to big cell phone company. My highest bill was $45 which was the first months service, my lowest at $24.24.

For those asking "should I switch to Fi," do it. No Ragrets!

As long as you don't use a lot of data :P

But even if you do there are other MVNOs. No one should be paying $120 a month for a cell phone.

showmethestudy•

Yep. The break even point for me is about 4 GB a month compared to Sprint's unlimited plan. I'm always over that.

FI would be more expensive for me for sure. Love the idea, love Google, but right now the pricing isn't economical compared to my Verizon unlimited plan.

Well remember that Fi also accesses WiFi networks internet you might not have access to otherwise. In addition, logging into a cable company WiFi using my cable internet account gets me access, so I basically have WiFi anywhere except roads and Target. Really cuts down on data usage.

Nexus and Pixel phones with the WiFi Assistant will connect to open WiFi network and secure it through a VPN. It will not connect to a network that you would otherwise not have access to.

As someone with a bill of $140 on tmobile, I can't wait to switch!

geoff5093•

How much data do you use per month?

2
mntbss•

A lot but I'm around WiFi most of the time

theHorrible1•

How the hell do you have $140/month bill?! I use tmobile prepay and its $40/month for unlimited everything, granted my data gets slowed after 2-3G.

Jump program unlimited data

Wife and I went from $215 a month to $75.

8 months here. I've saved $75 after factoring in the cost of my 6p ($499) and the $150 3 month Early Termination Fee I paid (It would have costed me more to keep my old plan for those 3 months than it did for me to cancel and switch to Fi + ETF).

FiTesterOP•

I didn't factor in the cost if the phone because I would have bought a phone regardless of being on Fi or not.

7
jayste4•

Most of us would, but the nice thing about Fi is that you may have received an nice phone at a discount with no commitment. That has to count for something.

2
ihaxrNexus 6P•

True. I guess my Galaxy S5 at the time was roughly the same cost as the 6p... ended up giving it to a friend who had their phone stolen, basically just gave me a really good excuse to get a new phone :D

1
noname001Nexus 5X•

Do you mean you buy the phone at full cost and still your phone bills were $120/mo? That's ridiculous!! I am glad you switched.

1
Sentrion•

The past tense of "cost" is still "cost".

4
ihaxrNexus 6P•

I know this consciously, but I can't bring myself to say "cost" in this instance. It just feels like there's a space between cost and me that is just lacking. Fixed my post though :)

1
daboose•

even including a new Pixel XL, Fi is saving me $25 or so per month compared to T-Mobile

1
ihaxrNexus 6P•

Yeah, I'm saving $50-$60/mn ... my $98 Sprint bill is now $30-$40/mn with Fi. Which is fantastic because my work will reimburse up to $50. :)

I still get Sprint telemarketing calls saying they will "Improve [my] coverage and cut [my] bill in half!"

mrmcweirdNexus 6P•

I've loved the savings so far. Unfortunately I'm switching off of Project Fi later this week. My wife really wants to stay on iOS and with the Verizon discount I get from work, a family plan comes to about the same price if I compare her individual plan + Project Fi. It's crazy how much individual plans are on the major carriers.

5
rabton•

True that. Not including fees, I can get 4GB on Verizon with 2 lines for just a few dollars more than I could get the same thing on Fi. Yet if I did only 1 phone line on Verizon it's like $30 more compared to 1 line on Fi.

I really wish Fi would have been a little bit better about the family plan pricing.

I understand it's probably great for all of you and in general is a good option for others but I gotta throw my two cents in here. If you're a data hound get ready to fork out loot and police your data consumption. I pay 140 ish a month, I use a lot of gps and listen to music. On another note, service isn't great outside of metropolitan areas. Big let down for me.

5
skadoo323•

Out of curiosity why are you still using Fi? If I was using that much data and paying per GB I would switch.

14
MommiesNewFriend•

Yea I am. Just doing tho whole "download everything before i leave my house" dance to cut down on data like everyone is suggesting to me.

1
miller69•

My so and I both had Fi. We both commute and stream a lot of music.

We're unfortunately cancelling for TMobile. It's $120 combined for unlimited everything which is less than what we're paying on Fi.

Hopefully next year once we move/aren't commuting and our data use goes down we can switch back to Fi, but it's just such a big expense we couldn't justify it anymore.

andersonimes•

Make sure you take a close look at the fees. I thought this about AT&T being cheaper and fees ate the bottom line difference and then some. Fi doesn't seem to have near the fees. Switching back.

(I realize AT&T isn't exactly a budget carrier - still worth watching the fees and realize you aren't always paying what is advertised).

bined for unlimited everything w

man thats tempting

Are you traveling very long distances, because if not you could download Google Maps data over WiFi to cut down on the amount of data Navigation consumes.

I don't know what you listen to, music-wise, but a Spotify subscription will let you download music on WiFi as well, so you don't have to consume cellular data listening to it when you're out and about. I guess that can be a little limiting, if you're used to listening to Pandora or something else that behaves more like radio, but if there is anything you listen to regularly, the savings could add up.

2
MommiesNewFriend•

potify subscription will let you download music on WiFi as well

Soundcloud!

GPS does not use ANY data.. Google Maps with live traffic updates, and downloading/fetching map data does, but you can download your home areas offline.

And I download Amazon and Google playlists for offline use on Mondays and listen to them throughout the week, then delete and download a new radio playlist the following Monday.....

Glynix•

I totally agree. I personally was never a person who needed unlimited data because I was pretty much always on wifi, so my bill with fi is about 30 to 40 a month max. With Verizon I paid about 80ish. I'm saving a ton of money.

3
unguardedsnowNexus 6•

I may not have saved money switching from republic wireless last year, but I got a whole hell of a lot better service with Fi, not to mention, Nexus, ability to root, ability to go to other countries and use data as normal, etc.

2
KiLLeRrKeNNexus 5X•

I'm on the same track but i'll be saving more, I paid $170/month before I switched to Fi. I love it!!!

1
trevordbs•

Still trying to get our bill down. But now that my work phone has 5 gigs of hot spot, well...that'll will help.

Going to do the family plan for next month, drop down the bill another 5$.

Right now it's about 60-70ish a month for two phones. Better than 120$.

1
everyman50Nexus 6P•

Wow congrats. Same here. I paid more for my phone (Nexus 6P - $500) than I did for Fi in the past year ($337).

1
zoomy942•

Agreed! Only using it for a few days but I am a Google admin and I was at a high school that I manage today and normally I have zero signal on any carrier and today my phones went perfect over Wi-Fi

1
threeclaws•

Over a year here, maybe $120 in total savings. You were way overpaying for your previous service.

I'm switching back to Tmo this month though, $50/mo but unlimited data will be fantastic.

1
GloryUprising•

I just gotta get over the mental hurdle of getting rid of UNLIMITED data on Verizon.
