Generic club fitting questions

(10hc, San Francisco)

I am considering having my irons fit but do not know where/how to begin. All of the club fitting information that I see is geared towards people looking to buy new clubs.

I like my current clubs and have a relatively consistent swing, but I'd like to have a loft and lie adjusted on my irons and wedges. Do places like the PGA Superstore or Golfsmith offer the service if I'm not looking to buy new clubs or shafts? What questions do I ask them to figure out if they are any good? Also, how much should the service cost for a full set of irons and wedges?

There's not much to loft/lie fitting and a Golfsmith or PGA Superstore would definitely be able to help you. Just take them in and let them know what you want. They'll have you hit on a lie board to determine if you need your lie adjusted and you can have them measure your lofts to make sure they are true to specs if that's all you're after. If you want to actually adjust lofts to adjust your gaps then you'll probably just hit on a sim for a bit and they can tweak the ones that need it.

As far as cost goes, they probably charge a couple of dollars per club to bend them. Not sure if they'll also charge a fitting fee alongside that but you can probably figure it out from their website or by calling.

Thanks. I wasn't sure if this was only available when purchasing clubs.

Nope, I did this very thing about a month ago at my local range, they have a pro shop and simulator there. They offer club fitting

they will adjust your current clubs its just usually free with new irons, and dont bother if its not forged cause 2 places told me they can bend the a degree but they dont garuantee it stays. golfsmith charges 4 bucks a club i believe in IL the driving range near my house charges 3. youll swing a few clubs on a board and theyll let u know probably wont even need too unless your really short or tall

That was bad info on their part. Any metal* will bend, and there's no such thing as "memory metal". Look at something as simple as a paper clip; if you bend it, it won't magically return to its original shape. Same can be said for metal signs (like stop or no parking signs), soda or vegetable cans...

Ping makes most of their irons from 17-4 stainless, and they have no problems bending theirs. They don't have one mold for every lie angle (color dot) they offer; that wouldn't 'be cost-effective. They have one, bend it to where it needs to be, then paintfill the correct dot later.

It takes different pressure to bend stainless steel compared to carbon steel. With carbon, you want a consistent pressure, but with stainless, it's best to "jog" it. Bend, release, bend, release, etc., until you get to the loft/lie you want. When you bend, it has to be with some oomph behind it, but it's possible.

Some fitters don't like to bend used sets of irons/wedges. Just like a paperclip, an iron/wedge can only be bent so much before it breaks. Some fitters don't want that possibility (liability), so they don't offer that service. Some (like me) will, but will have the customer sign a waiver. I don't know about the two places, and I'm not intending to put words in their mouths, but it's info that I think is handy to have.

*= There are two metals that you don't want to mess with. Titanium is one, because it's the Real World equivalent to adamantium (or as close as we'll get), and zinc.

Zinc is a brittle metal. It won't bend; it'll just snap off around the "crotch", where the hosel meets the club head. Not fun.

I'm 5'8" with a very steep swing. At this point I'm not looking to adjust my swing, but want to do my best with what I got.

Edit: I do not play forged or blades anymore. I dropped 10 stroke when I switched to Speedblades.

well if theyre casted there's limitations on what can be done with em, but im your size when i bought used mizunos they told me they needed to be shorter but wasnt worth the money to do it, just had to grip down half and inch. and im kinda steep with my swing measured out i needed a 1 degree bend up, but after doing al that i could just buy a better set with that already done. one thing i really want to change is the shafts but theres too many options and no way to test em
