Retail job + streaming

Discussion

I'm just starting out with my streaming and for a while my manager at my full time retail job was nice enough to give me all opening shifts. This allowed me to keep a consistent streaming schedule throughout the week. A few minutes ago, he told me he'll no longer be giving me all opening shifts. This pretty much screws over my streaming schedule. I was streaming 35+ hours a week and now I'll be lucky if I can fit in 20. I want to keep a consistent streaming schedule but with closing shifts at work, I'll be there until 9:30 some nights. I'm just wondering if anyone else has experience with balancing a retail job with constantly changing shifts, and a streaming schedule. What advice can you give? I feel like this will be extremely detrimental to my goals of becoming partnered and turning streaming into my full time job.

You can lose the schedule and do what many partners and non-partners do. Since you will know when you are getting home and are going to stream.

3h before tweet and facebook out:

Streaming at x pm for #game from @devs at twitch.tv/yournick + some image.

When your going live:

Stream starting today we are playing #game and possibly #game2 come and join us at twitch.tv/yournick

Basically you are just ruling out the schedule part. Many streamers do these things constantly since the folks want to get notified. Just setting up a schedule isn't many times enough :) Of source it's good that you tell the folks at your stream that you have this kind of hours. But it's a good spot to organize and setup like Gamewisp sub:s that eventually can get you being a full-time streamer.

I work every other Friday night and have been streaming every Friday, I just plan to stream when I get home from work (10pm-1or2am). I don't know if that is an option for you but that's my solution to my work schedule.

I work full-time, plan on getting certifications and a second bachleor's degree. Streaming 20 hours a week is a luxury, I'm lucky to stream for 3 hours a week. If streaming is not your main source of steady income, you should treat streaming as a hobby, not a job or duty.

Amen brother. Time management is simply how the wolves are separated from the lions.

I had this same issue for a long time and it threw my schedule pretty badly. Twitter and Discord/Curse if you use them are great ways to counteract this, simply keep your audience in the know! While not all of your audience can make the new timeslots of course, this also opens ways to grow your audience across various timezones. What this may mean over time is that no matter when you stream you'll have an audience to cast to.

Be sure to let your current audience know of your current situation. It may change back to the way it was in the future as well, so who knows!

You should think about your priorities again:
Having a fulltime job which pays your bills
or stream full time which will probably not pay your bills unless a miracle happens (since you just started with streaming).
Do what every other normal thinking human would do: adjust your schedule.
35+ hours a week or even 20 hours a week is a dream for most of us. I can barely make it to 15 hours/week, but my channel still grew really fast.

People replying seem to think that I have my priorities mixed up. I don't. My full time job is exactly that. I know is my source of income and I have no intention of quitting it or working less hours just to stream. I'm simply asking for advice on balancing an ever changing work schedule with streaming when my intention with streaming is to eventually make it my main source of income. Im asking this because anything I read on advice for growing your audience says to set a streaming schedule. But with a constantly changing work schedule, it makes it pretty much impossible to do that. My worry is that my audience won't grow because I'll now have to stream at random times throughout the week.

I get home 9 pm pretty much every day and stream from 10:30 to 1am every night. Gotta work with what I've got.

Stop streaming or quit your job. The thing you like is clashing with your income sources. Now you have to choose which is replaceable for you.

Go to school full-time, work part-time, and I run a YouTube channel and stream two days a week and soon to be increased to four.

If you love something, make time.

I don't think this is a matter of "making time", it's about not being able to keep a consistent streaming schedule due to your "daytime" job.

What else is new?

Most people aren't professional streamers who depend on streaming income. If he has a daytime job to pay the bills, he may just have to resort to ad-hoc streams like normal people. It's hard to maintain a consistent schedule, especially with a day job, but I've also seen people take on much more and still be able to stream a few times a week because it's their hobby and passion. If you love something, you make time for it, no matter how tired or busy you may be and no matter who you are.

Most jobs have a somewhat fixed schedule, that you can build your streaming schedule around. OP's issue isn't the lack of time, it's conflicting schedules. Stop being intentionally obtuse.

u/5hundredand5 has it right. It's not a matter of finding time. It's a matter of not being able to be on a consistent schedule. My goal with streaming is to make it my main source of income. And to do that, I wanted to keep a schedule to make sure I can grow an audience. I don't have a large one to begin with and the people that do watch me, my current times have been great for them.

I'm still going to be streaming as much as possible. My worry is the inconsistency in the times.

Thank you u/5hundredand5 u/nikitheliger and u/DYoshiiTV for the advice.
