I accidentally happened to be there when the police apprehended the person who shot a protester on the Morrison bridge

I was drunk and riding home from the Speakeasy on my bike when I stopped at the Hawthorne food carts thinking I might want some food. I walked around and decided I wasn't interested in any of the food options and began to leave. Right after I'd unlocked my bike, I heard a bunch of sirens, and then a car followed by 10-12 cop cars pulled up literally right in front of me. The police said on the bullhorn that the suspects were being apprehended due to being suspected as having been involved in the shooting of a protester on the Morrison bridge. At one point, an officer told me I needed to back up right now. I guess because I was drunk and not thinking, I didn't and kept watching the events unfold. A couple of minutes later he came back and said "Remember how I told you that you needed to back up???" and at that point I knew I needed to back the fuck up and did so. Anyway, the people got out of the car with their hands up and were cuffed and arrested. But the whole experience was super surreal for a person who was drunk and had no idea what was going on.
Cool you get drunk and ride your bike around.
Pretty sure that's illegal. Right?

Yes, it's covered by the same statute that covers DUII in a car. Informally, we call it a PUII - pedaling under the influence of intoxicants.
Yes. You won't crash into anyone but it's much easier to cause accidents/get hit and ruin several people's lives.
I don't make it a habit to do so, and I'm not excusing myself, but I was only mildly drunk. I'm smart enough that I know when to find other ways to get home if my ability to ride my bike is too impaired. And considering the number of people I know who've admitted to driving home drunk, I think in such situations I've presented relatively little danger to others.
Fuck the haters man. No, biking drunk isn't the most responsible thing, but it is miles better than driving drunk.

Riding down hawthorne drunk.... How big of a fuck up can that guy be?
I wasn't on Hawthorne at any point other than when I crossed 12th, but I suspect your comment wouldn't change based on the street. You don't know me and my guess is that you'd feel stupid saying the above if you did. At any rate, I wasn't very drunk, and know my limits and make other plans when I know that I'm too inebriated to operate my bike. I'm not trying to excuse my behavior, but I presented very little danger to anyone but myself.
It's not like you can't just walk the bike to the bus or something if need be, I think people are giving you a harder time then you deserve over this.
At any rate, I wasn't very drunk
Earlier...
I guess because I was drunk and not thinking
Yeah you're right, your comments don't really change my opinion.
I presented very little danger to anyone but myself.
If I hit and killed or maimed a biker, whether it's his fault or mine, I would be very devastated.
I thought the police said the suspects were arrested near NE 102nd & Sandy (by Bill's)
That's definitely what the police said. Maybe this is for the other two guys?
Yeah, I saw that so I'm not sure what the deal is. Either they initially spotted the car there and finally stopped it on 12th, or I guess they could've stopped the wrong people before they caught the right ones.
Photo is on SE 12th between Hawthorne and Madison, which matches OP's story.
I thought the arrest happened elsewhere? PPB press release says
It might have been different guys.
It was mistaken identity. Similar car and suspects. Girlfriend happened to be there, car matched description, etc. But they found car next day so it had to just be a wrong car.
Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for the info.
I was driving on East Burnside around the same time Friday night early Saturday morning and saw a Clark County Sheriff SUV pull over a silver sedan, which was really weird. I mean not unusual for them to lend resources to Portland for the protest event, but to see them conduct a traffic stop on the Oregon side of the river.
Could have been a standard DUI or whatever I guess but I wonder if the cops were pulling over any car in the area that matched the description.
As I said in another comment, I'm not sure what the deal was. My guess is either they initially spotted the car there and finally stopped it on 12th, or I guess they could've stopped the wrong people before they caught the right ones. But they said in their bullhorn that the suspect was being stopped for the shooting of a protester on the Morrison bridge, so that's how I initially found out what was going down.
Glad to know you bike and drink. Drunk car drivers are the worst.
I think the protesters are too used to bashing cars of scared white folks to understand that gangbangers don't play that game. They aren't intimidated by a crowd of 50 vegans surrounding them, and will take them all on.
Take them all on? They can't shoot a weapon. You seem to think that 18 yr old "gang bangers" are hard core. Those gang bangers were cowards. As a CHL carrier, I know for a fact a gang member would lose in a shootout against anyone with any training.
Oh against someone with a CCW yeah (look at my username dude), but have you seen the protestors? I'm saying a carload of MS13 could easily beat the crap out of a bunch of unarmed gender confused middle class millennials.

That's a stealthy undercover...
Luckily the shooters were gang members who can't shoot for shit, which is why the victim is alive.
The day that hi-point thinks to put their sights on the sides of the slide is the day that gun homicides rise back to 70's levels.

Really? Didnt they know it is illegal to carry a gun with a loaded magazine in multnomah county?
edit: yay, down votes for actual county ordinance by people who think laws will keep gang bangers from shooting people in Portland.
If you have your CHL (they 150% didnt) you can carry a gun, round chambered, with a full mag all over Oregon.
I know, Im being facetious. Create a law that the gang bangers are not going to follow and not reduce crime so that everyone feels they are safer. Just like how oregon negated the Collectors federal firearm license (C&R FFL) last year because, i guess, so people dont have to worry about the gang banger's shooting up their protesters with WWI guns.
Ah, lol! That went over my head haha. Seriously though! A tech 9?! Worst gun ever!
How did the negate the C&R license? You now have to do to a FFL for in-state C&R transfers between licensees?
When the get sentenced to way more time than they would have otherwise, would your shitting on the law still apply, or nah? The fact that they're gonna get charged with that will make it way easier to coax them into pleading out... objectively.
The shooter shot randomly behind him, he wasn't aiming.
those wacky Trump supporters!
I don't think he is a trump supporter, so much as generally pissed: https://m.facebook.com/steffon.corothers

These protests have really been creating a dangerous environment. I feel heartened that they seem to be dying down.
