Moving to Whitehorse
Hi!
I am considering a move to Whitehorse. I have a potential gov job offer there. I am a 32 yo single woman with a husky dog, who loves hiking and the outdoors. I lived in many places including: France, Belgium , Brazil, Quebec City, Toronto, Calgary and more recently Edmonton. Even though I was raised in a large city and used to love the city life until my late 20's, a year spent in Calgary made me fall in love with the Rockies and changed me forever. I went from being someone who loves shopping for designer handbags to spending all my money at MEC on climbing gear :) if that makes sense. Recently I moved to Edmonton for a great job opportunity however I just can't stand living here. My job is great and I live in a nice area, but I find Edmonton unpleasant, ugly, too far from the mountains, and people are mostly unfriendly. I don't buy the "Edmonton is a green city with lots of nice festivals in the summer and a great river valley" slogan. I'd rather live closer to the mountains than here for the river valley... problem is there are no jobs (or good jobs) in my field in Calgary. I have a background in health and experience in the corporate sector (so I can work in either health/biotech companies, or in government).
What is life like in Whitehorse? As a born and raised "big city" girl, who lived in Europe and Toronto, and went to grad school, am I being desilusional to entertain a move up there? I want proximity to the outdoors, quality of life, but not isolation/a depressing lonely life. Any chances I will make friends there? Dating???
Because the Yukon doesn't quite have a health research agenda yet, or advanced health/social/ capacity building programs in place , I was thinking that this could be a fantastic career move from a "long-term" perspective.
Would a 150k wage allow me (and my spoiled husky girl) to live comfortably ? I still have some student debt to pay off.
Other questions: is food too expensive? Is there a dog daycare in town? Is downtown Whitehorse dangerous? Are there safe trails for me to walk my dog by myself.
So many questions... Any advice would be appreciated!
