This pretty much says it all about the modern left wing. To paraphrase Christoper Lasch Americans can't change things that matter so they focus on changing things that don't.. Safe space!

"The heirs of the New Left of the Sixties have created, within the academy, a cultural Left,”Richard Rorty wrote. “Many members of this Left specialize in what they call the ‘politics of difference’ or ‘of identity’ or ‘of recognition.’ This cultural Left thinks more about stigma than about money, more about deep and hidden psychosexual motivations than about shallow and evident greed.”

Sounds a lot like what Joe Bageant had to say.

Yeah those are legit concerns about Socialism but there are alot of examples of Democratic Socialism out in the world that function fine. Check out Gar Alperwriz, the Democracy Collaborative, the Next Systems Project and the Pluralistic Commonwealth.

The first two countires that implemented socialism were countires that had no tradition of democracy. Namely Russia and China, those were autocratic states.
