mining
i'd spent a long time in the mines.
coal turning my face grey,
the diamonds in my eyes misted over.
my pickaxe handle bloody,
and my boots scratched.
then i found my emerald.
i looked at it and it sparkled,
each imperfection imperfectly perfect.
it shone in the darkness
like a lightbulb in a dark room .
it hurt to clutch,
but it was all i'd ever wanted to hold.
and then it fell from my palms.
i watched helplessly as it tumbled down the ravine,
cave walls screeching,
my hands trembling.
my emerald,
my gem,
my world,
was gone.
i threw my heart helplessly into the ravine after it,
left the mine empty,
and returned to the world,
with a fake smile and real pain,
and spent my nights traversing the caverns of my mind.
