looks like bonsai acropora to me.
If so, a nice piece for sure, but tricolor, it is not.
This is correct. I have a few of these in my tank. OP, put it way up high and in high flow. From my experience, anything purple needs very high light, even more than most acros. Purple will brown easily so thats why it's now brown. Give it a couple weeks in high light and it'll start to purple up very quickly.
Thank you, you guys got it!
"Tricolor" is a common term (now generic, originally used as a "designer frag" name by ORA) for certain color varieties of Acropora valida. Other species may be sold as "tricolor" at times, but they're all closely related and have similar care requirements. The same goes for bonsai acropora (I believe that term was first used by GARF).
Edit since this is one of my favorite corals- You'll be able to tell if it's happy with the light level by it's color. Under lower light it'll have green polyps on brownish skin with light purple growth tips. Medium light is the same except the skin turns more green. Under high light (my preference for this one, and the way yours looks now) the skin will be a rich purple color with bright green polyps, and the growth tips will be bright, electric blue with a bit of white at the very tip.
Wow thanks for the info! I have it very high up in the tank directly under my kessils and right in front of my wavemaker and it seems very happy! Been growing pretty fast in the past few weeks.
Thank you both for your info, I just picked up a tri color and now have a better idea how to tell if it's happy. You said you use kessils, do you use the kessil controller? And if so what is your schedule? I'm just using the schedule given to me by kessil for a mixed reef, but would like to start tweaking it.
It was added to my order last min as an impulse buy. When i got it it was an ugly brown color and just a tiny stick. The kid at the store said under good lights it would get some nice color and it has done well under the kessils. It's now purple with a blue sheen to it that the pictures don't really due justice.
Some sort of acropora?
