Mov Patrick Kane Review

Other

This review is for the 92 overall version of Patrick Kane.

Line: Roenick - Mov Toews - Mov Kane

Synergies active: DD, WW, TW, TT, B

Let's start with the bread and butter

Hands/Puck Skills: 9.5/10

This is the area that Patrick Kane makes his living, tight spaces, multiple players, it's all the same to him. While his puck skills are already elite (96 deking, 96 hand eye, 98 passing, 97 puck control) adding the DD and TT synergy add +3 to all categories. He's got fantastic hands for picking up loose pucks. His ability to carve around is excellent. Hands are also excellent for deflections when he's in front or off to the side of the net. He has phenomenal control for loose puck dekes and can perform a myriad of them from almost anywhere on the ice (though be warned, as his stamina decreases he beings to loose control and high difficulty dekes such as the through the legs deke). He also possesses 97 OA which means he's often in good position to grab pucks and make deflections. His high hands and puck skills also make him an excellent passer. He can slide passes through tight spaces and add some sauce when necessary. His passes are crisp and land flat putting him in with the other elite playmakers of the game.

Shooting: 8.5/10

This is the second of Kane's strengths. Kane has one of the most lethal wrist shots in the game. He has a very quick release, which is great for pick corners. His shooting is among the most elite of the show (98 WSA 95 WSP - though both get a +3 with the WW synergy). Combined with excellent hands, Kane is able to get shots off with very little space in addition to hitting even the smallest of targets. With regards to clappers, he is rather underwhelming (93 SSA 89 SSP - though bombers will add +3 to both) having an accurate shot but not very powerful. This unfortunately translates to his ability to hit the 1T. He's makes good contact with the hand eye and puck control skill but unfortunately it's pretty soft. He can still pick the corner pretty well but it's no canon. For this reason, I'd recommend primarily taking wristers when shooting with Kane. The lower rating was because of his clapper ratings.

Skating: 9/10

Kane's one of the league's better skaters. He has good base skating stats (95 Speed, 96 Acceleration, 93 speed - TW grants +3 to all three) making him able to carve up opponent's D. His skating is best used by making use of his high agility and acceleration. His strengths are moving from a slow speed, making a sharp cut and ripping one top cheese. Make use of stride dekes and quick movements that oppose your opponent's direction of movement to burn flat footed defenders. A quick movement and deke makes for Kane's wheelhouse. Having only 89 balance, Kane isn't the most stable on his feet. He can be pushed off of the puck and that AI "bump" move works relatively well (however, because of his high puck skills, Kane usually picks up the loose puck). The other downside to his skating is his 89 endurance and 86 durability. He doesn't have the stamina of a horse, but he's not Taylor Hall. He's got enough endurance that he can be used on a first line and special teams but not overwhelmingly. Don't use him to PK, PP and on his regular line, he'll be gassed and his ability to pick corners and make dekes is noticeable. His acceleration is noticeable as he pull away from the pack for breakaways on a regular basis. He is second in skating only to the likes of Bure for his player type.

Physicality: 6/10

Let's just start off by saying Kaner isn't exactly going to be wallpapering your opponents. At 5' 11" and 177lbs, he's not the type to drop opponents with a big hit. He has 74 bodychecking, and 76 aggressiveness making his susceptible to getting floored by larger opponents if he gets lined up (hopefully your use of his agility will prevent this situation).

He's a lover not a fighter. Sporting 66 fighting skill and 81 strength, he's not going to be channeling his inner Connor McGregor anytime soon. If you're in a fight with him, you'd better hope your opponent sucks.

His balance enables him to retain puck possession but it's not enough to account for his lack of body checking.

Defense: 7.5/10

Kane's defensive awareness sits at 90 and his stick checking ability is 93. He's very good with his stick lift and his poke checking is pretty accurate. He doesn't take a lot of penalties with 91 Discipline. He's good at being in position and using his stick to create defensive turnovers (and he's lethal in transition). He'll have a hard time trying to box out bigger players in the defensive end and with only 77 shot blocking, he can sometimes be a liability defending the point shot.

Overall: 8.5/10

Kane is fantastic offensive piece if you're in need of a finisher. He has fantastic hand around the net and a lethal shot. He has a very quick release and can pick the corners well. He's best used by creating space with his skating and dekeing abilities. He'll get bodied if you attempt to use him in a shoving match. He's great in tight spaces and not a huge liability on defense (but defense isn't why you buy a Patrick Kane card). He's also a clutch player (97 poise), keeps calm in late game scenarios and is can bury in late game scenarios (He's also great in OT as he has plenty of room to operate). Is he worth the 1M price tag? Probably not. If you have the assets available and you need a scorer that's agile, pick Kane. If you need the same but with more size than skating, I'd suggest going with an Ovi or someone similar.

The overall grade was given in regards to card price, and card type. Meaning that his offensive stats were taken with higher weight than his defensive because of his card type. Though his high price point has a negative impact on his rating (conversely, the 92 TOTW Kane, would have better value - more around 9/10)

I'm always open to feedback. Let me know what you like, what you didn't like. If there's something that would make the review better.
