With JR Smith out 12-14 weeks with a thumb injury, how much more improved are our odds at grabbing the first seed in the East?

Cavs were already weak at backcourt depth before this injury, now they have no real backup one or two.

Not much lol, if it was Lebron then our chances would have gone wayyy up but with Lebron, Kyrie, and Love still there, the Cavs have barely lost anything.

If we (GSW) can beat Cleveland on Christmas and you guys beat Portland the day afterwards I'm sure you'll get it. The problem is that even if that occurred you'd have the play us immediately afterwards so it's kinda like a "I want to help you out because we (GSW/Raptors) have mutual foes (Cavs) but then I have to...deal with you" type of situation (unless the Raptors beat the Warriors on 12/28 in this scenario which would give them a cushion for the #1 seed while the Warriors retain their #1 seed).

TL;DR:

  • GSW beats Cleveland on Christmas
  • Raptors beat Portland and then us (GSW) afterwards and they should have it

I can't think of any other scenario for getting it immediately being 1 game behind.

Frye will still singlehandedly outscore a team.

and Shump has become a better 3 pt shooter.. although he doesn't go unconscious from 3 like Smith does.

Dude, I know it's the PC internet thing to say that, but I'm not celebrating it. It's a fact of basketball and sports in general that as players get injured, their teams tend to perform worse to some degree. It just so happens that the injured team is the one we're hoping to beat in the regular season so we can have home court advantage when we likely have to face them in the playoffs. Are we never going to discuss this so as to not seem like we're celebrating an injury? I'm certainly gonna discuss the issue.

I think you need some reading comprehension. Nowhere in OP does he celebrate JR's injury.
