Why are the Pacers so disappointing this season?

On paper the team seems to be constructed relatively well. They have a star player and good pieces around him. In spite of that they are doo doo.

I'm not gonna be up here and act like I watch enough Pacer games to have an opinion on the matter, so I'm hoping some of you guys could shed some light on this train wreck

From what I've seen, Monta and Teague go together about as well as toothpaste and orange juice. Haven't seen too much recently, though.

Didn't even know Monta was on the Pacers...I feel like we don't hear about him anymore.

3
clear831Heat•

Well that is because he sucks, most pacers fans hate him now.

kcheng686Spurs•

Yeah they seriously dont fit well together.

Hill was like the perfect Monta compliment piece. Teague is too similar to Monta

Noah for Monta.

Come on, keep squeezing that orange juice baby. 🍊

Damn I forgot all about Teague haha. What's he puttin up this season?

Like 16/7/4 on 43/30/84 for the season. Not a good look for ol jeff. He lit my celtics up on thursday, though. 30+ points, I think. He's been doing pretty OK since Monta's been out.

They're 3 games within 3rd seed. They're a team with average defence and offence. Mediocre like most of the east, exactly like I predicted. Overrated by the casuals and media. One allstar in PG. Rising star in Turner. Good support players in Teague, Young and a inconsistent role players in monta and al jefferson.

They met my expectations.

TrillTaskforceOPRaptors•

When they moved Hill for Teague, that was supposed to be a move towards getting a starting PG that fits their idea for how the team should be. They also added a solid vet in Al Jeff. You can't combine all those roster moves and also fire a good coach for someone else in-house and then basically stay the same. They had a vision for what they wanted to be and how they wanted to progress and it's not really materializing. In the NBA if you aren't moving forwards you're moving backwards.

crisscross424Raptors•

I agree they regressed a bit so far. The Teague trade and most of their roster turnover were downgrades. Sure they made most of their moves to bolster their offence but offence only went from 23 to 20. And the very consistently elite defence went from 3 to 18. And they have a negative net rating this year. Bird gambled and lost, they're just not any good.

I really don't feel like the Teague trade was a downgrade. The problem was it created an incompatible back court. A second move was needed to alter the starting lineup. I think most Pacers fans will agree that we either need to move Monta completely, or at least get him to play as a 6th man. And what other roster turnover was a downgrade? Love the Thad Young trade as well as letting Mahinmi walk. Loved what Mahinmi gave us last year, but letting him leave allowed us to throw Turner right in to the fire of the starting lineup.

1
crisscross424Raptors•

It was a downgrade in my books because George Hill was the perfect fit with 2 ball dominant players in Monta and PG. Hill worked very well offball as a shooter and was a great defender. Teague is neither of those things, and like you said monta+Teague backcourt is kinda redundant because they both can't play D or shoot. Pacers need at least one guy in the perimeter who isn't ball dominant is 3&D.Plus I always thought G.Hill was underrated (he's balling out in Utah).

I don't think Turner's ready to play center yet, he's more of PF right now. Mahinmi was one of the best big man defenders in the nba last year for you guys. Thad Young is a pretty bad defender, so I saw a downgrade on defence there as well. Also Al Jefferson is an offensive black hole and poor defender.

So although the pacers marginally increased in offence, their defence fell off considerably.

They're 3 games out of 3rd, I dunno what you were expecting.

Because they need a better Pacer.

foxsleftearRaptors•

Teague-Monta-George-Thad-Turner is a wildly inconsistent shooting lineup.

2
T-In-The-ClutchPacers•

No heart. No effort. Terrible coach. "Superstar" that isn't playing well or with any level of consistency and it really shows that he doesn't want to play here anymore. Basically 95% of the team is on autopilot every game.

2
22every-dayPacers•

New coach, new starters and several injuries are the main problem. Defense is above average offense is just stupidly inconsistent. Often we'll run a decent play just to end it up with an ISO with 8 on the clock

2
StealingyourcarbonPacers•

Defense is not above average. Defense sucks.

3
22every-dayPacers•

A week ago we were 10th in the league, just checked again we were 16th. From the eye test I would have said 20th, it's been underwhelming as a whole

1
funkyfreshleo•

You guys have a new coach. Give the system time to workout and chemistry needs to build. It's a good core of players and Turner has good potential.

2
Lowry_to_DeRozanRaptors•

They aren't that bad. They're hovering around .500.

1

no one is saying they're bad, they're just saying that they are somewhat of a disappointment this season.

Many were saying they could be a dark horse in the east

is it disappointing though? at the beginning of the season to my eyes, I figured they would be around 500ish with their inconsistency

1

Yeahh, before the season I predicted them getting 3rd seed. Its looking like I was very wrong

Me too, and i was like pretty sure

paul george isnt as good as people made him out to be.

1†
TrillTaskforceOPRaptors•

I disagree. We faced him in the playoffs, PG is probably a top 5 player in the conference.

6
22every-dayPacers•

Start of this season people considered him #2 in the east, he's been injured a lot and inconsistent between injuries but he's still great. I understand people not considering him #2 but people are almost writing him and them off

4
fabosexy•

Then he should play like it consistently. injury excuse can only last so long, he's 27 and is in his prime.

1
Paramus98[LAC] Blake Griffin•

They got a new coach and changed like half of the team. They're still getting used to playing together. They've been a bit more consistent as of late, but still, I don't think they'll really play to their potential until the end of the season.

1
jaesav•

Their ball movement isn't great

Fuck our backcourt. We haven't had a solid one since Stephenson/Hill.
