Team Composition Basics and comparisons with Final Fantasy
Hello everyone, I have been playing RPGs since I was very young, on an original NES. The one I remember the most is Final Fantasy(the original, not FF7, or any other future installments). This game taught me the basics of team comps, and what to look for in building an effective team.
there are 6 classes in the original game:
Fighter/Knight (high health, sustained damage, aka tank)
Thief/Ninja (fast moderate damage, gains some aoe, aka offensive support)
Black Belt/Master (early low damage that gets incredible late game, with moderate high health, aka heavy dps)
Red Mage/Wizard (can use most magics has decent armor and weapon options, doesn't excel at anything but decent at everything, aka all around)
White Mage/Wizard (focused on defensive buffs and healing, aka healer/support)
Black Mage/Wizard (focused on high damage burst spells and aoe, aka dps/aoe)
with this in mind I have been able to classify most of the characters in dc legends into at least one of these categories. these are the basics of any RPG, probably partially due to the success of the FF franchise. so really it comes down to, how do you want to play? I will now go over some of the basic team comps that I had success in within the original FF.
Basic Beginner comp:
tank
heavy dps
healer/support
dps/aoe
this team gives you basically everything you need to be successful in the game. good sustain and damage for a variety of opponents. good solid choice if you don't know the game well.
Advanced team comps:
these are for more experience players, but allow for more customization and a much different game play experience. some are way more challenging though, and should only be attempted with caution.
veterans
tank
offensive support
heavy dps
all around
the solid veterans go to line up, typically consisting of less support from healers but with more burst potential for boss fights.
the heavy special team aka magic heavy
all around
healer/support
dps/aoe
dps/aoe
very heavy concentration of powers that my not offer a lot of sustained damage, but will clear minions and waves of enemies with ease.
tanky beaters
tank
offensive support
heavy dps
heavy dps
forgoing all of the healing for the most formidable offensive you can muster on a single target in the minimum amount of time. while this team lacks almost any healing or support ability it packs a lot of raw damage potential to quickly down even the most difficult enemies in only a turn or two.
while I think it would be great if I could list all the characters in the game and categorize them based on what they can offer, I hesitate to do this as many characters are behind the pay wall, or just very difficult to obtain in general. as such, I will go over the characters that are farmable in the campaign mode, because regardless of how you do in PVP or events you should be able to at least get these characters eventually.
Green Lantern HJ - tank, provides solid defensive capabilities and some control and support to his team, can be made into an all around if not the leader.
zatanna - healer/support, provides the healing and debuffs for any team to sustain.
batman cc - heavy dps, provides heavy damage and some utility with his silence, more there for the damage though. simulates high health by having invisibility in his kit.
sinestro - dps/aoe, provides high damage and mass damage to a team that needs it.
bane - tank, self healing and some good damage, and some control for your team as well.
green arrow ea - offensive support, provides debuffs and an aoe to help control the match, decent sustained damage.
sss lex lutor - healer/support, provides small heals, speed ups and meter manipulation for your team.
cheetah - offensive support, provides damage over time that is percentage based to take down even the healthiest of foes, has decent burst and decent team support.
cyborg - heavy dps, provides a big damage number when you need it, although inconsistent in accuracy if you don't use the 1 2 combo, when it hits its game over most of the time, can be made into an offensive support depending on how you build his kit.
huntress - heavy dps, provides the "big hit" when your team needs it to down a pesky foe, decent survivability.
chemo - tank, provides the big body and that you need some times, can self heal and decent sustained damage, could function like an all around if used for his ability to slow down the opponents and slow the game down to a control pace.
Harley mj - tank, provides the taunt to protect the squishies if needed, and the evade will simulate a higher health character. dose good sustained damage and offers control when needed.
wonder woman pot - tank, provides taunt for the squishies to hide behind, while also offering the decent sustained damage output and some buff cleansing.
grundy - tank, provides the taunt those squishies really appreciate, can do good sustained damage, and has an aoe to help out when needed.
flash - heavy dps, breaks several basics of rpgs with his kit, allowing his moderate to low damage to begin stacking up rather rapidly if he is built up over the long haul of the game, starts slow but has huge pay offs late game if you put in the time.
dr fate - healer/support, while not a traditional healer, shields do allow for an "over heal" sort of effect, and his debuff purging is nice too.
hawkgirl - offensive support, provides some stuns and an aoe, has sustained damage.
star sapphire - healer/support, provides much healing, a lot in the form of mend which is over time, also has a good supply of str down for the enemy team, and a decent aoe to help clear out lower health enemies while also providing str down to those who survive.
green lantern js - all around, provides shields to act as pseudo healing which is great for your taunt tanks, and has an aoe to help clear enemies, could be made into a tank if that's what your team needs.
black adam - dps/aoe, provides that high damage that many teams want and need, great at dropping a single high health target or a bunch all at one time.
those are all the characters in the campaign, seems like the game wants you to succeed too, as the first four farmable nodes give you the beginner comp: Green Lantern HJ(tank), Zatanna(healer/support), Batman CC(heavy dps), Sinestro(dps/aoe). I hope this will help you if you find yourself having difficulties with in the game.
please leave a comment, enjoy.
