I wasn't expecting to get 20 of anything, but I was hoping for a few of the level 3 gear bits to get my team past the 4->5 hump. I'm not far enough in the missions to grind those. The 600 gems I'm not really fussed about...it's not like I paid for them, so whatever.
I think I'm probably not nearly as emotionally invested in this game as most of the players in this subreddit are.

The thing is, for 600 gems, unless you really cant beat node four of any of the events; isba waste of resources.
For "just" 1k gems i was able to take Batman gear from 7 to 9 yesterday, and that was refreshing nodes to farm level 1 mata because im having the opposite problem- i have enough level 3 but not enough level 1 mats for any of the 3 types.
So for 600 gems you couldve ranked a single toon from 5 to 6 with mats to spare

Well u could have used the 600 gems to refresh the mystical archive or other gear events 6 TIMESS!!!
If you ran node 1 all those times you would have been rewarded 30 level 1 mats each run; of the affinity of your choosing. Meaning you would have gotten 540 gear materials with that 600 gems.
What do you mean: "affinity of your choosing"? I grind nodes in heroic, normal and timed events. I have NEVER been able to specify I'm grinding for level 3 mats from any of the relevant nodes that can spit them out.
I think he means you can choose whether you get mystic/physical/energy mats by choosing to do the relevant timed event rather than getting a random mix from the store pack
