I just had a heart attack

..two weeks ago. And I'm on my third day of keto. I hope to get off all the meds they have put me on.

I hope I'm doing the right thing.

The very best thing you could do IMHO. PLEASE read the FAQ. https://www.reddit.com/r/keto/wiki/faq

Electrolytes important. And do let your doctor know you're going low carb.

I got started on keto for a friend in a similar situation. We are both in our early 30s, and he got put on heart pills. I told him this was his fucking wake up call since we aren't getting any younger. Started it together, keep it going together. One month in his doctor took him off the pills. Fast forward 8 months, he's lighter than he was in high school (under 190 lbs.).

I'm no expert, but in your shoes, that's what I'd do. I wish you strong and well, very quickly.

That must have been absolutely terrifying. May I ask how old you are, sex, etc?

Hey! I'm a New Year keto beginner too. I'm also an ER nurse that cares for a lot of heart attack patients, and I just want to congratulate you on your lifestyle change, but note to you it is especially important that you watch your electrolytes. Your heart is healing, and you likely need a greater amount of Magnesium than someone who isn't in your situation, and of course your Potassium needs to be balanced as well. Please discuss it with your cardiologist.

Good luck!

It sounds like the damage has been done. Keto should help with the inflammation in your arteries and hopefully avoid further heart attacks. Lowering your inflammatory markers overall will be of great benefit to you!

Good on ya Ktall. 2 weeks from my 1st anniversary of a heart attack. M/51. Was 96kg. Smoker/drinker. I went full on keto soon as I got home. Got down to 82kg in 6 months. Best I ever felt. Had blood done and doc told me I should live till I'm a 100. WTF. He was impressed, he told me to get off the meds before THEY Killed me. As he said you only need them if u don't change ur lifestyle. Like Hello, if you survive a heart attack why wouldn't you change ur lifestyle. Read the FAQ 20 times and you will be a new person in no time. Best of luck.

Holy shit, OP. Transitioning into a keto diet can be really hard on your body (the keto flu part, I mean). PLEASE PLEASE talk to your doctor before and during this.

Keto Flu is 100% avoidable if you supplement electrolytes properly.

This is only a problem if there's kidney damage/reduced kidney function. Which...we don't know if OP has or not but it should be a consideration given her other health concerns.

Keto will do you well eventually but follow your doctor's orders. High fiber foods to clear your arteries plus a fiber supplement. Drop weight in a healthy but fast way. Then when you can afford it start keto and make sure it's wiring for you. Don't risk your life on the hope and a prayer that this will work as well for you as it has for others. It very well might but you have to work for the room to gamble. Just my 2 cents.

How does high fiber food clean your arteries? I was not aware that fiber could get into your arteries, I thought it just passed through your digestive system.

Fiber doesn't get into your arteries but your body sends excess cholesterol to your digestive tract to be shit out. It only gets cleaned out of there if you have enough fiber for the cholesterol to attach to. Otherwise it gets run through your body again and builds up else where.

Interesting. I did not know that about fiber.
