Is the base game still active enough?

So me and a friend are planning on getting on PC this for the survival mode and I'm also quite looking forward to playing the multiplayer. However I've been told that just getting the base game is pointless as everyone just plays the DLC. I am planning on getting the Season Pass, probably next month. Should I wait till then and get it all at once or can I still have some fun barebones.
