I think Digimon is better than Pokemon
Were you ever the type of kid who grew up and whatever you liked was second best? Kids liked NSYNC, you liked Backstreet Boyz. Kids liked Coca Cola, you liked Sprite. Kids liked Chocolate Ice Cream, you liked Vanilla. And of course, kids liked Pokemon, and you liked Digimon. I was. Well, at least with Digimon. I remember as a kid waking up and watching Digimon and Power Rangers while I waited for the bus, and watching Digimon: The Movie like 20 times when I was 4 or 5. I had no idea what was going on, but it was awesome. Seeing Greymon square off against Parrotmon, Omnimon wipe out all those Diaboromons.. It was amazing.
Although like most things as a kid (or for me, at the very least) it just kinda faded away. I never disliked it at a certain point like I did when I grew out of the other things I liked, like Power Rangers and WWE, it just sorta... disappeared. It didn't help that none of the stores near me sold anything Digimon related. No toys, no video games, nothing. Or maybe I just wasn't looking in the right places lol. But anyway, it stayed like that for a good while, up until around July 2016. I tend to stay up pretty late, like around 2am or so. And from time to time I go through all the theme songs of shows I used to watch as a kid, I imagine there's some people who do the same. Anyway, I eventually ran across the Digimon theme, that being the "Digimon, Digital Monsters, Digimon are the Champions!" one. Once that was finished, I saw the little recommended bar to the right had "Pokemon vs Digimon | DEATH BATTLE |" Listed. And I thought to myself, why not? I had avoided watching it when it first came out, kind of because I was a little afraid that my childhood would be destroyed, but hey, it was late, I had nothing better else to do, what could possibly go wrong.
I watch it, and as they explain Digimon's side, all the memories come flooding back. And as a plus, Digimon won. So I decide to search for Digimon stuff on Google, and eventually I found out that they were making an English dub to Digimon Adventure Tri, which features the original characters in high school, and that it would play in limited theaters. I quickly went on Fandango, and to my glee, I found a theater relatively near me that would play it, and tickets would release the upcoming Friday. I decide to scroll down and read the description they wrote, and soon as I saw the quote from Agumon “Tai, look at how much you’ve grown!”, I started to tear up.
It kind of hit home to me, since it was like Agumon was saying it to me, like look at how much I've grown both literally and as a person since I last watched Digimon. Silly, I know. And since then, I've re-watched the first season, read up on some of the mangas, and just got Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (which is amazing btw)
Back to the point at hand, I did try to get into Pokemon a few times as a kid, and recently as well. I tried the trading cards, I tried the games, and I (sort of) tried the anime. Sort of in the sense that I watched a bit of Pokemon Origins, and I've watched some episodes of the main series at friends houses, but I never finished it. It just never clicked with me. The characters weren't all too interesting to me, and the story was fairly bare-boned in my eyes.
Whereas the characters in Digimon actually felt like real people to a certain extent, in the sense that they dealt with real world issues. Joe's father was pressuring him into become a doctor, Matt and TK's parents were divorced, so Matt was trying hard to be a good big brother, Izzy was adopted, Tai almost got his sister killed and has to live with that thought, etc. etc. Not to mention Season 3 actually shows how a parents relationship with their kid can impact them. And the story is always pretty amazing, albeit a little hard to tell sometimes in the english dub, it's still there. With the characters of Pokemon, I never felt like I could connect with them. Sure, the Pokemon anime had its moments, but from what I've seen they seem few and far between.
So overall, I like the story and characters of Digimon more than the story and characters of Pokemon. There's only so much you can do with the basic "I'm a kid who's gonna explore the region and catch all the Pokemon, and stop an evil gang along the way" But yeah, there you have it. I hope I did this right, I never posted here or to any subreddit before. So if I did anything wrong, apologies in advance.
