Games with the feeling of progression

I've been trying to find an online game, it can be single player to, but preferably online. With a sense of progression and a social aspect to it. Kind of like Maplestory, where you have a character you can have fun dressing up and socializing with, but also spend an ungodly amount of time getting good gear for him.
