ELI5: Why do people get travel sickness?

So whenever I am in any vehicle, I need to be watching the direction we are travelling. If I look at my phone, read or look at pictures for a brief second I feel violently ill! Sometime's when I'm not driving and read road signs I get really sick. However when I am the driver I can read signs without a problem?!
