(Spoilers main) The Wight Strikes

MAIN

So I'm currently rerunning the books in the form of the audiobook (which are excellent and I have no idea why it took me so long to listen to them).

Anyway I just reached the Jon chapter where the dead NW wight sneaks into Mormont's room and attacks. I haven't seen this talked about a great deal, but basically I don't think it was sent by the white walkers. Some notes first of all

  1. These wights don't appear as the others do from my memory in the show or the book (essentially zombified drones) but instead this wight was able to carry out a pretty clandestine mission, including breaking a guards neck. This in itself is strange.

  2. Jon is awoken in the night, he doesn't appear to have been suddenly woken by a noise etc but notes as a passing thought at first that Ghost is freaking out a bit and has been clawing at the door (Jon notes there are deep gouges in the wood). So it seems quite lucky that Jon awoke at this moment considering where this chapter is going.

  3. Next the way is clear to mormonts chambers until they see the wight, a fight breaks out which is the least fishy thing about this whole chapter. Mormont is awoken and for some reason walks over groggily with a lamp despite there apparently being a full blown brawl occurring with severed arms getting kicked around.

  4. Mormont's RAVEN screams 'burn' after which Jon is able to take the initiative by seizing the lamp out of a seemingly immobile Jeor Mormont's hands and setting the wight on fire.

  5. From this encounter everything changes. The NW are made aware that shit is going down north of the wall in regards to the threat of the wights. And perhaps most importantly, the Lord Commander is given a first hand demonstration of what the wights are and their weakness.

My conclusion from all of this is that I'm almost certain this whole thing was orchestrated by bloodraven. My reasons for this are that:

I can't see why the white walkers would want the NW (perhaps their biggest threat due to the magic wall etc) to know about the threat and by assassinating Jeor another lord commander would just rise up. As well as this, like I said the NW then became aware of the wights weakness as well.

Mormont's raven normally repeats things that others say, but on this occasion it said it seemingly by its own initiative. This, in my eyes, makes me certain that this is blood raven interfering with events. I mean it was the freaking raven who said it to Jon! It also seems incredibly fortuitous that Jon seems to wake up at just the right moment (after the guard is dead and before Jeor is killed) seemingly on his own, and then goes upstairs and happens to fight the wight before Jeor steps out, immobile as a statue seemingly holding out the only weapon that could be used to stop the wights. To me it's just blood raven sending the NW a gift wrapped present.

The one thing I'm confused about is the implications of magic past the wall. It's clear that there are limits to bloodraven's magic since a certain reindeer riding ranger couldn't go past the wall, and this also seems to extend to the white walkers. So I'm not sure how that whole can of worms factors in.

Tl;dr - blood raven orchestrated the assassination on Jeor Mormont so that it'd fail and show the NW how to kill wights, and to get them to prepare.

Let me know what you think about this, like I said this is a re read for me so I'm reevaluating everything I thought I knew so far
