CMV: My parents were wrong to forbid me internet after 10pm.
Hello reddit,
I don't know if I came to right subreddit, I only need my view changed if I turn out to be wrong, and if you prove me to be so. So I apologize if I came to the wrong subreddit, but I wanted to let that out of my chest anyway, I thought this place would be the most suited for this kind of thing.
So to sum it up, my parent started to shut down the internet around 10pm, they did this when I was top of the class anymore, it started at secondary school when I was 12 or 13.
There is one good outcome that came out of this, and many bad outcome, the good one: I've familiarized myself with computers ( and a bit of network ), I often cheated to get my internet access after 10pm, for example my dad as a switch that would, I presume, block the power between 10 PM and 8 AM, well I just modified it to 10 PM to 1 AM. I also learned that cheating is ok, provided no one knows about it. So thanks dad and mom I guess. But that was only when I was 16, 17, so too late when the damage were done. Here are the bad outcome :
-
by prohibiting internet, they thought they would make me study more, it only made me want more of it ( internet ), it meant that I was spending hours and hours on the internet until the last minute to squeeze the most of out it... ( please remember I was 12 at that time ), which hindered a lot my productivity, and my grades... also, I was 12 at the time, put yourself into my point of view, my parent shut down my memes, do I just tell myself : " oh well, I guess I should study? " of course not, I was 12, when teens usually get rebellious, all I wanted was to proved them wrong, so I refused to study. It also made me want to stay up late

related to the previous one, i would often lie to my parent : " I need the internet for homework " except I didn't, I just pretended I was writing some stuff then quickly alt tab to my dank meme, it was 80% derping on internet and 20% studying, but that created a bad automatism later, i couldn't study around a computer anymore, my mind always went somewhere else, i couldnt focus more than 5 minutes without checking forums or whatev, but i managed to unlearn that bad automatism now, only i wish i didn't had that in highschool, i could've been in a much better uni

and maybe less important, but related to the previous one, they would sometimes come into my room without warning to see if i'm studying or playing, I hated that, the constant fear of being spotted not studying, because of that I hate it when someone, whether stranger or friend check my screen and look what I do, and that's probably normal to many people, but I don't let anyone touch my electronical devices, too much porn on it
Anyway, I feel like if I'm fucked up like this it's because of them. I kinda feel like their decision was very lazy, like they shifted the blame on me, while their responsibilities was to educate me. I know I was an easily distracted kid at that time, and I should've known when to stop. But was this the right way to teach me how to stop ? I don't believe it is, if I was a parent and my kid happened to be like me, I wouldn't shut down his internet, I would help me manage his time, balance between productivity and leisure, instead of just shutting down the internet and pretend I'm helping. You don't teach math to a kid by shouting " WRONG " everytime they make mistake right? You guide to the right answer, well that's what I would do. You guys don't need to change my view, actually I would feel better if you agreed with me because that will leave a burden off my chest, that burden of knowing if it was their fault or not, but if you guys CAN change my view, I would love to hear what you would have to say!
Thanks, sorry for english mistakes, not my first language
