Please help, I can't find the buttons!
In 2016 we gave our company website a massive overhaul. The old website was slow, outdated and badly designed. It was also "one size fits all" in the sense that external website visitors and internal admin-level users used the exact same web pages with the exact same URL's, except the website showed extra objects for admin users, so they can do things like editing, deleting etc.
While this worked OK, it slowed the site down quite a bit, especially since the website was build on a very old PHP framework, but has over the years had a lot of new features (most made for a much newer framework) bolted on to the website. I was responsible for the redesign, and I was also in charge of the development team responsible for bringing the website kicking and screaming into this century.
One of the key things I implemented is to separate the public facing site, and the admin tools used by internal users. The public site was upgraded, redesigned and developed specifically to be as fast and user friendly as possible to the public, and a completely separate admin site was developed for internal users. This all went live in Q1 2016. At the time of launch, I also wrote a FULL user's manual for the new site, though the site was designed to match the old design as closely as possible, to make the transition easier for staff. We also added a drop down menu to the public site's main navigation visible to internal user's only, where they can go to any of the pages in the admin site.
Today, I was contacted by one of the highest level employees in the accounting department (who happens to be the biggest pain in my ass). To continue the proud TFTS tradition, I shall now introduce you to the characters for today's tale:
$me: This guy. $Pita: Self explanatory :P
$Pita "Hey $me, I can't seem to find the buttons to delete [thing she had to delete]. They used to be there. I am logged in, but they aren't there anymore.
$Me "Are you on the admin site? If not, go to the admin site. The [page she is needs] is the third item in the main menu."
$Pita " "Yes but the buttons are missing, can you come have a look?"
$Me (ugh) "Sure."
I wonder over, already knowing full well she is not on the admin site and looking for the buttons on the public facing site where they used to be. I'd be surprised, but if I had a dollar for every time I had to remind her to use the admin site instead of the public site over the last 6 months, I could retire early.
Once I reached her screen, I (surprisingly) calmly said:
$Me "You're not on the admin site. I told you to go to the admin site."
$Pita "What do you mean go to the admin site? The buttons used to be right here, now they're not."
$Me "We launched a new website a few months ago, which you are fully aware of. We also launched a new admin site, which you are also fully aware of. You use it every day to perform other tasks."
$Pita "Oh, well where do I do [thing she needs to do]?"
$Me "Click on the admin drop down. Now click on [clearly labeled link in the menu for the exact thing she's doing]. Now you can search for the transaction you need and edit away."
$Pita "This is so annoying."
I now understand why some companies never innovate, and still run on Windows 95 or something. Some users simply can't handle change.
