Connection between dreads and spirituality?

Ok this might be a bit stupid, bit I'm just curious. Why exactly is it that there seems to be some sort of connection between dreads and spirituality? I mean, of course this is a stereotype, but if you look for a spiritual person, you're more likely to find one if you ask ten dreadheads than if you ask ten people with normal hair.
