The mistakes he had found vs. the mistakes he found

Which one of these is correct?

The mistakes he found were horrendous. The mistakes he'd found were horrendous.

The first one sounds right to me, and its the way I would have written it. However, I read the second version on a blog post. Can someone explain the difference to me.
