Graphics Sync?

I have a 1440p 144hz freesync monitor (PX277) and I want to get a 1070-tier card.

Should I just get a 1070 and disregard freesync? How badly is freesync required for most games nowadays? I wanted to go AMD but their cards look very weak compared to nvidia's. I always see conflicting reports about freesync, some say it's just a meme and doesn't make a big difference. Others say it's worth more than 144 fps
