Options for Martials: a brainstorm session.
This is a continuation of my previous thread about solving the problem of the linear warrior. Approaching the issue from the " make martials stronger " angle as opposed to the " nerf wizards " direction, I'd as an exercise, like to collaborate with the group on coming up with sample abilities that a martial character can do in a high fantasy setting. I personally think that increasing options without taking away others toys is for the best. Ideas can be system agnostic, but I'll be operating under the context of 3.x as my last post did. So I'll start.
- Using special materials (like asbestos and oil) to block fireballs and ram into the caster with the flames.
- putting out or feeding fires with the air generated by your weapons swing
- throwing objects into the way of evocation spells to stop them mid flight. Advanced version could be using arcana knowledge checks to determine WHAT to toss to create various effects like smoke screens, aoe damage fields ( from shrapnel), etc.
- leaving decoys behind on a reflex save. ( think pathfinder has this for the ninja. )
- tool assisted spider climb.
- using enemies as cover
- controlling movement with ranged attacks to " pin down " opponents.
- stopping physical based spells with strength. Advanced versions could redirect by tossing them back like a giants rock throw ability. Or ya know. Beating them over the head with their failed black tentacles.
- creating dirty trick opportunities with reflex saves. " I slide across the grease effect, stopping in front of the bad guy to splash him in oil. "
- No selling attacks to gain intimidate bonuses.
- using bluff checks to cause friendly fire against ranged/spells. (Similar things exist in melee already. )
- using bluff to break line of sight without hard cover. ( I believe hide in plain sight does this. But I'm thinking as a reflex to dodge spells. ) like a rouge flaring his cape as a misdirection tactic and baiting an arrow or a lightning bolt, leaving a seared/torn cape behind while he rushes in.
- setting bear traps or similar obstacles mid battle and making enemies accidentally teleport into them.
- using massive strength to slam larger creatures heads into the ground as they try to bite you to set up friendly follow up attacks.
- using thrown weapons to pin enemies.
- using thrown weapons to hit multiple targets.
- using bluff checks and knowledge arcana to force concentration checks. " abracadragra. Wait... that's not right! " -using knowledge arcana to predict where a spells targeting and dodge it.
- using engineering and high strength to carve tunnels at high speeds, make walls, or cause collapses. Also, using bluff and knowledge arcana in tandem to make enemy casters cause collapses on themselves.
- using sleight of hand and knowledge arcana to counterfeit spell components. To either recreate spells for cheap or too make an enemy spell backfire.
That's all I got for now. Please, add more.
