Opting Out of Powell's Team Option
Do you think the front office would ever opt out of Norm's $1 million team option on next year's contract?
If they opt out now they have potential to sign him for a bridge style contact while his value is not sky high. A contract for 3-4 years at 6 million dollars would allow the team to develop him without the risk of having to pay top dollar when his rookie contact expires. As an example, Harrison Barnes was not re-signed by the warriors and is now making the max after his contract expired.
With the limited cap space we have next off-season we would not be able to sign any meaningful free agents anyway, with the exception of making trades or not signing lowry and patterson. We would still have the mid-level exception available to sign a player to a deal similar to Sully.
I really feel as if Norm will be a part of this team's future. While it may be nice to have an invisible cap hit for him next season, I think it would ultimately cost more money and opportunities in the long run. If we don't extend him this year we also run the risk of losing him to free agency because we cant afford him, similar to Bismack.
