[advice] New, shy cat not eating unless I pet her

Discussion

I adopted (my first) a 2 year old cat on Friday (named Princess Leia). The shelter said she was very shy and she's been hiding under my bed since I took her home but still loves to be petted. The issue is that she hardly eats or drinks until I get her to pur- then it's right off to the bowl.

I noticed after the first 24 hours having her here she hadn't touched her food bowl, so I fed her out of my hand. Then I coaxed her to eat from the bowl using treats and finally on Wednesday, just by petting/encouragement.

I got home from work today and noticed she hardly touched her food from this morning until I got her to pur. As soon as she was purring, she got up and ate almost all her food.

My girlfriend is worried (not her first cat) but I'm hoping this is just a quirk along the way of getting her comfortable with me and my apartment. Did I make a mistake hand feeding her in her hiding spot or something? I've read about emotional eaters but I'd like a little assurance that I didn't "break" my new feline friend.
