Story for people just starting out sober
I don't know maybe this will make sense:
A man wanted to learn how to work with jade, so he could make a living carving this semiprecious stone into jewelry, statues and other objects. He went to a master jade carver and asked to learn all that this carver knew, and the carver agreed. He told the man to come back the next day in order to begin his training.
The next day, the man arrived early for his first lesson; anxious to begin his new career. The master jade carver asked the man to sit down and told him to hold a piece of jade in his hands. The man complied and then the master carver began to talk. He spoke about stones and nature, as well as life in general. After several hours, he took the piece of jade from the man and told him to come back the next morning. The man was a bit confused because he had come to learn about jade, but he decided to come back the next day because he felt sure the master would teach him about jade then!
The next day, the hopeful man was again told to sit and told to hold a piece of jade. Again, the master jade carver spoke for several hours on many different subjects before sending the man home for the night. And again the hopeful, but confused man was told to come back the next day.
Reluctant to quit, the man went through this ritual for several days. It wasn’t until a week into this experience that he finally voiced his concern. He arrived on time and when told to sit and hold the stone in his hands, but he protested. He had come to learn, but he was NOT being taught! This babbling about life and other stuff was meaningless…he wanted to learn about jade! The master jade carver tried to calm him down and was finally able to get him to at least stand still for a second. He then gave the irate man a piece of jade to hold.
“This isn’t jade!” said the truly irate man.
“No, it isn’t,” said the master jade carver. “By holding jade for all those hours, you learned to feel what jade is and isn’t. You have learned its properties. Now you can learn how to carve it.”
