Graphics card install

So This is my first graphics card upgrade so bear with me, today I just got the msi GeForce Gtx 1050ti and I plug it into the pci slot on the mother board and I try and turn on my computer. The card doesn't turn on/doesn't function. My monitor has no signal to it and I'm not completely understanding if I have to have the 6pin plug plugged into the card for it to work or if I can just use power off the pci.

I also have a 500w psu..
