How about a control points gamemode?

News & Discussion

First of all, let me explain what I mean by "control points". Basically, there are 3 or 5 control points on a map. Each team starts out with 1 or 2 control points already controlled by their team, the ones closest to their base, and then there would be a neutral, uncaptured control point in the middle (like the control point in control) that would unlock after 30 or so seconds.

After this middle control point is captured by a team, that team can continue and try to capture the closest enemy control point and after that, if there are 5 control points, attempt to capture the last enemy control point. Of course, the other team can strike back and capture and recapture enemy control points. The winner is determined by who captures the enemy team's last control point.

Also, at the beginning of the game the only control point that can be captured is the neutral one in the middle. After this is captured, there will only be two control points that can be captured, all others are locked. These two control points are ones that are next to/near each other but are both controlled by different teams. In theory, around these two control points would be where most of the fighting would take place. The maps for this gamemode would, of course, be mirrored.

TF2 has this gamemode and, personally, it is one of my favorite gamemodes in the game. What I think I would like about it in Overwatch that I liked in TF2 is the fact that all hero types (offense, defense, tank, support) would, in theory, be viable for both teams because this gamemode can require a single time to be on the defensive to defend a control point and, at another time, require them to be on the offensive to capture an enemy-held control point. Although the normal control gamemode can also encourage this team play style, I feel like a "control points" mode would encourage it more.

I also feel like this would be nice, more balanced alternative to capture the flag. For example, in control points and ctf each team has the long-term goal of capturing something held by the enemy team, unlike control where only one team has the goal of capturing something held by the other team. Also, as I mentioned before both gamemodes could encourage all hero types since both teams can be on the offensive and defensive at different times during the match.

I want to hear what you guys would think of such a game mode. I don't think that it would cause balancing issues unlike if ctf were to be added because this gamemode is basically an extension of another gamemode (control). I don't know how well it would go down in competitive, but I don't see what could go wrong with it being thrown into quick play. So, what do you guys think of it?
