Base Jason Spezza player review
He currently plays on my third line with Nyquist and Phil Kessel. As you can tell I have a pretty low budget team, so keep in mind this review is in relative terms to those kind of players. But I was hoping that this review would help newer hut players like me or even players that are looking for a low priced hidden gem.
Bought for: 750
Skating: 8.5/10 To me Spezza is a pretty good skater, he is able to deke past those big defenders, but he's also pretty good at controlling his weight on the puck and able to hold his own against those big defenders. And don't get me started on his dangles. Overall Spezzas skating is one of the things I like about him.
Shooting: 9/10 Now this category alone is why I love Spezza. I feel like his wristers can be game changing. Granted I am only in Div 7 but those games that are nitty gritty and you're in a deadlock with the other player, Spezza will come in and clean up those shots you haven't been putting in all game. Now his slap shots are pretty average I feel like. But overall love his shooting.
Faceoffs: 7/10 This is the category that I would say Spezza is most average in. He's not going to go above and beyond for you in this category but he's definitely going to win you some important faceoffs. He's surprisingly pretty good at tie up for not being the biggest guy.
Passing: 8/10 Spezza is above average in the passing department, if you need someone to control the middle and dish the puck to your wingers he fits the bill here. He can thread the needle on those tough passes as well as making those stretch passes you need to win the game!
Defense: 6/10 Spezza is obviously not the best at defending and can get beat pretty easily when dropping back to help on defense. To be honest I don't use my centers too much to defend so my rating for this category may not be the most accurate.
Weaknesses: Spezza doesn't have too many glaring weaknesses that are going to make you want to bang your head against the wall, but if I had to nitpick I would say that he isn't the fastest player, it seems his dangles aren't equivalent to his speed if that makes sense.
Overall: For the price you will pay for him he's fantastic. In my past 3 games he has gotten me 5 points. The dude plays much higher than his overall suggests. If you're on a budget and need a game changing center he is your man. Hope this helps someone!
