HUT Goalies in Reality

There's a lot of talk about the worth or worthlessness of goalies around the sub and I'd like to take a stab at explaining it, or at least how I view it. For reference I'm a D1 player who excels at limiting shots and defense (generally), I run SB and T and my defensive are four legends + Grossman's 92 and 89 Klingberg.

Goalies realistically have the following ratings

  • Stopping things they should: x% (includes things like high wristers,
  • Stopping things they shouldn't (robbery): x%
  • Rebounds given up: x%
  • Aggression (ability to save breakaways/shootouts with proper pokes): x%

I'll try rating (mostly high end) goalies I've used a lot or played against a lot. All goalie rating are my subjective experience. I will try to never look at past reviews or the stats on the card.

MS Crawford (91) (thanks for the lend u/zahrdahl!)

  • Stopping things they should: 93%
  • Stopping things they shouldn't (robbery): 60%
  • Rebounds given up: 10%
  • Aggression (ability to save breakaways/shootouts with proper pokes): 25%
  • Honestly Crawford was a big surprise for me. I saw the 400k price tag and just couldn't imagine he'd be a very desirable card at 91 OVR. His initial stop power was on par with fancy versions of Lundqvist and price, a small bit below. He's quick side to side, he's agile, he gets over fast. I think that's really something that sets him apart is that he just feels more fluid than a lot of other goalies. He bailed me out quite a few times on the side to side one timer plays. The other big thing that stuck out to me is that he made a lot of second chance opportunity saves, a thing I don't think a lot of goalies do very often. You know when they get a shot off, it comes out and onto the tape of a forward and you just think "well this is going in", that's the time Crawford really shined for me and made unexpected saves.

SS Bryzgalov(90)

  • Stopping things they should: 50%
  • Stopping things they shouldn't (robbery): 10%
  • Rebounds given up: 25%
  • Aggression (ability to save breakaways/shootouts with proper pokes): 20%
  • "Why you heff to be mad?", because this is what bad looks like. He let in an inordinate amount of bad shots. Multiple online players could pick corners on him with ease, over and over. He gave up a high amount of rebound chances and could never really get those secondary saves in. I expected to come out of my games with him with a more favorable review given the praise he gets around the sub, but I found him extremely bad (with good synergies).

MOV Jones (87)

  • Stopping things they should: 80%
  • Stopping things they shouldn't (robbery): 40%
  • Rebounds given up: 15%
  • Aggression (ability to save breakaways/shootouts with proper pokes): 5%
  • MOV Jones is a weird goalie. Blocking things in close, side to side, he's really good. Like, really really good. He moves exceptionally well. If you're playing someone who just assumes you have a great goalie (takes good % shots), he'll play like one. However the problem with Jones is when you run into players who pepper him with good shooters. He lets em in high, he lets em in low, he lets them in from far. He's very vulnerable to high slot and above snipes. This theme reoccurred with him over and over in my games. Games where they tested him a lot from dumb angles he crumpled, games from people who took a low quantity of solid shots, he shined. If I split up the "stopping things they should around the net" and "stopping things they should from afar" he's get like a 95% and a 60%. He also doesn't seem to "lock pucks up" very well and a lot of shots that get on him fall and trickle around him. I can definitely see why people like him and I do think he plays above his OVR by a fair bit, but he's not for me.

MOV Price(95 at the time)

  • Stopping things they should: 98%
  • Stopping things they shouldn't (robbery): 40%
  • Rebounds given up: 5%
  • Aggression (ability to save breakaways/shootouts with proper pokes): 15%
  • Price is the most consistent goalie I've seen, he makes it look easy, and isn't aggressive. He doesn't give up many rebounds

MOV Lundqvist(94 at the time)

  • Stopping things they should: 95%
  • Stopping things they shouldn't (robbery): 50%
  • Rebounds given up: 8%
  • Aggression (ability to save breakaways/shootouts with proper pokes): 25%
  • Lundqvist is very reliable, but occasionally let's in a shot you'd expect him to stop. He makes a lot of saves you wouldn't think he'd get to

Hero Turco(94)

  • Stopping things they should: 90%
  • Stopping things they shouldn't (robbery): 33%
  • Rebounds given up: 10%
  • Aggression (ability to save breakaways/shootouts with proper pokes): 50%
  • Turco's best/worst attribute is his aggression, which will depend on how much you like aggressive goalies and how capable you are of rolling with the punches and cleaning up his potential messes. I loved that about him, he's stop a lot of breakaways and potential breakaways by going way out of his net and snagging pucks or tossing out poke checks. He's a tier down from MOV Lundy/Price in terms of reliability for sure, but managed to rob people a fair amount. He will cause you some goals against while you get used to his antics.

MOV Holtby(93) (thanks for the lend u/DestructoDevin!)

  • Stopping things they should: 92%
  • Stopping things they shouldn't (robbery): 30%
  • Rebounds given up: 5%
  • Aggression (ability to save breakaways/shootouts with proper pokes): 20%
  • WAY more reliable than Turco, great at not giving up rebounds. Pretty quick side to side. Holtby, like Price, makes it look easy. He's not fumbling and jumping, just positionally sound. He doesn't make a lot of desperation saves, and instead he'll just grab it with his mitt. I actually did better with him than I have with most other goalies and he had multiple shutouts. He didn't come far out of his net to wrangle pucks like Turco does. Holtby tends to make the safe play. I really did miss the aggression when using Holtby, this didn't take away from his save percentage however. Top tier goalie. Caveat: I may have ranked him a bit low because his saved didn't LOOK spectacular, which is probably some bias.

DC Emery(92)

  • Stopping things they should: 85%
  • Stopping things they shouldn't (robbery): 20%
  • Rebounds given up: 10%
  • Aggression (ability to save breakaways/shootouts with proper pokes): 30%
  • Emery is a bit of a wild card compared to the other two high end goalies. He let's in shots you'd expect him to block a bit too often, his aggression can save your bacon.

Lundqvist(90)

  • Stopping things they should: 80%
  • Stopping things they shouldn't (robbery): 10%
  • Rebounds given up: 20%
  • Aggression (ability to save breakaways/shootouts with proper pokes): 5%
  • Base Lundqvist performs much worse than 94 Lundqvist. I had stretches where he was impressive, and stretches where he couldn't stop a beach ball. He gave up a lot of rebound in my experience with him, and let a lot of shots hit him and trickle through him.
