Mike Smith is a hit or miss goalie. When he first started out for me, he was 14-0 in D2/D1 with multiple shutouts.

Then, like with every goalie I have used, hits a huuuuge slump after an amazing start.

He's been decent since, but lets in quite a few softies.

He is now my backup to 92 Emery, but I rotate based on their performances,

High: (9.5/10.0)

In my experience, Smith is quite exceptional at saving high shots. He stopped nearly every single against-the-grain pullback wrister. Seriously. Play decent defense and he will not disappoint. His only shortcoming here is that he may let in a few high D-D one timers, from time to time.

Low: (8.0/10.0)

Lets in lots of soft five-hole shots from up close. Other than that, I haven't had many people shoot low on him other than for rebounds, so not much to say here.

Quickness: (9.5/10.0)

This 6'4" monster of a goalie is lightning fast. Being quicker than Jonathan Quick lets him stop every. Single. Short-side one timer. Unless they shoot far-side one timers, i.e. pass to your lefty RD and aim blocker-side, he will bail you out. No regrets.

Positioning: (8.5/10.0)

Regarding the last remark about far-side one timers, Smith's positioning is iffy. He's usually there for wrist shots but can slide over too far as the puck moves around. Be careful if they have a good cycle game, they'll light him up.

Rebound Control: (8.0/10.0)

Rebounds are decent, they stay close to him instead of flying to the middle of the slot. Pick up the garbage around him before he lets one in this way.

Shooting: (100.0/10.0)

He has the Wicked Wristers synergy for a reason. Shoot the puck whenever you can. He hasn't scored a goal for me in the many times that he left his crease to play the puck, but seeing as he has scored two goals in the NHL you'd expect him to score eventually... Right?

Conclusion

For most people in high divisions, leave ASG Smith as your backup tendy. Leave the starter spot to guys like Kolzig or Hextall. His synergies should be the main reason why you get him, the Bombers are a huge plus.
