Valentine's Day Event Questions

So from what I understand the Valentine's event is until Feb 20th. When I buy an alt avatar with gold, how do I gift the same avatar to a friend? I just bought an avatar but I'm not given any options to gift it. Was I supposed to gift it to him first and then I receive the avatar?
