Physical Disks for SQL Server
Similar to this post form 3 years ago https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/1qbmqe/physical_disks_for_sql_server/ I'm also pricing out a standalone app and ms sql db server. However, considering my db requirements are much smaller (< 10GB) does the advice to get SSDs in that thread still apply? This application mainly does EDI document translation and transmission, and seems to have fairly low IOPS requirements. I’m trying to not over-complicate this and keep the cost low, so I’m thinking to go with a PowerEdge R430 with RAID 10 across 4 physical spinning disks and windows partitions or 2 sets of SSDs in Raid 1. My main concern with the spinning disk setup would be disk head thrashing while writing/reading to the backups, logs, data, and TempDB. Any suggestions?
