Using scary noise as a deterrent

help

My 20 month old beagle was formerly a research dog that we adopted last May. He's coming along ever-so-slowly with basic training but we love him to pieces. Over time his charming personality has emerged and we're enjoying his sense of fun and mischief. One of his many personality quirks is that he's scared to death of the raspberry sound, which makes him run and hide in another room. We no longer make that noise on purpose when he's around.

Another aspect of his personality is pure beagle stubbornness. It's safe to say he couldn't care less when we correct bad behavior. He's a chewer and nothing is safe. We yell DON'T as a correction, but if he doesn't feel like obeying he'll look us straight in the eye and continue mangling the mail. I was thinking of changing the correction to the raspberry noise but don't want to do that if it will do nothing but cause a nervous breakdown. Any advice?
