Overusing the sustain pedal, tips/advice?

I have this tendency to overuse the sustain pedal, so the notes sound all bundled together. But when I don't press on the pedal, it sounds "short," but not like how it would for staccato.

Any advice to help me break this bad habit? Keep in mind that I'm a self-taught pianist. ;;
