Current Situation
I was just informed that my father is going to be giving us a wedding gift this year of $25,000. It will likely be opened with his Wealth Manager, who will help with investment options. Regardless, my next life goal will be saving and ultimately putting a down payment on a house in hopefully 3 years time (max). In addition to this, at the end of April, I will be receiving my long-awaited annual compensation bonus. That variable comp is looking to be around $18,000 in gross pay (is it safe to assume that could result in about $10K in liquid cash?).
If I consider that bonus compensation, I guess I am looking at $35k worth of investment. However, the $25k gift will likely need to be financed/invested through the Wealth Management company. Given that, I'm trying to prepare myself for a strategy conversation with that wealth manager. Given the consistent 5 straight days of all-time highs in the marketplace... I am very intimidated by the thought of putting that $25k into the marketplace. I'm trying to consider ETF, Stock, CD, Mutual Fund, etc. diversification strategies, but unsure what would be best with a 3-year short term goal of becoming a home owner.
Another area I am concerned with is my depleted emergency fund. My first thought is to use the $10k annual bonus check to contribute that entire amount into my emergency fund and keep it as liquid cash. Or would it be worthwhile to contribute half of that sum into a savings account to collect some sort of interest (perhaps Ally bank for example?).
If This Matters?
For sake of confusion and since my fiancee was at work, I couldn't provide enough details of her employment and savings. Here are a small amount of details if this needs to be considered:
- Salary: $44K
- Debt: Recently paid off her last credit debt and is happily debt free
- Savings: She just started with this company about 7 months ago, but is putting about 8% into her 401k
THANKS FOR ALL THE ADVICE, GUIDANCE, and SUPPORT!
