Boots to Black Screen.
Hello. I just tried to install i3 in Ubuntu 16.04, but every time I boot up now, Ubuntu loads into a black screen. By using grub, I am able to access a su terminal, but I'm not to sure what the problem is. I run
i3 --moreversion 2>&- || i3 --version
and the output is
Binary i3 version: 4.13 (2016-11-08) \copyright 2009 by Michael Stapelberg and contributors
When looking at the website, I notice that the website has another line with "Running" below this. i3 is installed in my /usr/bin/i3 folder. When running i3 reload, I get a line "ERROR: Could not get i3 IPC socket path. Any ideas?
Edit: When running
ps -A | grep i3
There is no output.
Edit 2: I was able to get it i3 working from my root recovery mode by first running
mount -o remount,rw /
to mount it as read write, then
xinit path/to/i3
to start i3, but this only starts it for root. I still can't get it to start at boot.
Edit Final: Turns out some commands are a little outdated from 12.04 to 16.04..... in my .xinitrc file I added
xinit i3
instead of
exec i3
And now it works. Woo. Issue closed.
