Opportunities to rise from software engineer

I'm wondering what path to go down in technology after graduating, where to focus my learning. I want to be able to rise into management and above if possible and was concerned that software engineering was too technical and that I could spend years working my way into more technical less management sort of roles if I'm not careful.

Am I completely wrong in this assumption and software engineering is a fine path to go down, or should I try and switch to project management or something else asap?

For background I'm on my year in industry as a software engineer currently.
