Is there a reliable way to text from your computer yet similar to apple's messages app?

Its one of the few things I still really like about the iPhone. being able to text from my MacBook when I'm at work is bullet proof and I'd love it if Apple would release messages on other OS's as well. Meanwhile if google could get an app that routed texts through an app as reliable as messages Id probably switch on the spot.
