He slumped into my office, filling the room with the reek of sweat and tobacco. I indicated to the chair and he oozed into it, the leather seat groaning with the strain of his shapeless body.

I let him wait while I fetched my notebook and pen. He fiddled with the manila envelope in his hands.

"How can I help you?" I asked, sitting down, the large wooden desk separating us. He was a dodgy character, even in kindest of lights he looked shifty, yet in my darkened office lit only by the dim table lamp, he looked positively evil. His shadow cast huge on the office's wall. Usually I wouldn't even let guys like him through the door, they're not worth the trouble, but I saw his clothes, his car, heard his last name - and I knew he'd be rich. I needed the money.

He got out a cigar from his suit jacket and looked around for an ashtray. "Can I smoke?" he asked.

"Not in here." I replied, and repeated my question, "How can I help you?"

With a frown he slid the envelope towards me. I pulled out the papers. "It's my wife..." he started.

I quickly stopped listening to him, it was predictable stuff. He was worried she was having affair and needed a PI. He mumbled something about keeping it quiet and I knew why he came here - he needed someone discreet, small time, and without a reputation. But it wasn't what he was talking about which stopped me, it was the picture held neatly at the front of the documents with a paperclip. I carefully took it off and laid the papers to one side, placing the photo on the desk.

"She," I said, interrupting him, pushing the picture towards him, "she is your wife?". I tried to keep the incredulity from my voice but from the way he shuffled indignantly in his seat I clearly failed.

"Yeah, and I think the bitch is cheating on me..."

I held up my hand, stopping him mid sentence, and held his stare for a moment. Then I extended my open palm for a handshake.
