I bought Warhammer on humble sale, how competetive I'm going to be in PvP battles without paid DLC?

I used to play Shogun 2 multiplayer battles a lot but stopped at some point. I'm thinking about getting into Warhammer, but I'm wondering if it has similar problem with units being added by paid DLC that you absolutely must have if you want to win against people owning them.
