Rivière is so hauntingly beautiful.
I've slept on this song (and pretty much all of SNW) for the longest time and I don't know why. I've read so much dislike for it that I just thought the album wasn't worth giving a serious listen to, much like with self-titled. Well, I listened to it anyway, and for some reason always skipped Rivière. Maybe it was because of how incredibly somber the mood of it was? Maybe because Chino's voice sounded a little strained and forced? I don't know, but I do know that I was an idiot for ever disliking it.
Seriously, the mood is so beautifully encompassing; Chino's voice is raw and emotional; the instrumentals are flawless. I don't even care that the lyrics are about a witch. It's just a very sad and very gorgeous song. It's been stuck in my head all day, which is why I'm writing this, but really. If you have doubts about this song or Saturday Night Wrist, go lay in a dark room and listen to it. Really listen to all of it if you don't mind drowning yourself in a dark mood for a little while.
And then do the same for S/T if you were doubting it too (shout out to Anniversary because it's similarly depressing).
TL;DR - Rivière is an amazing and underrated song. All of SNW is beautiful. So is S/T. Give 'em a chance! And if not, then that's cool too... I just wanted to write this.
