[suggestion] tool cupboard 2.0 + decay changes
just yesterday i joined an official server (London 1 to be precise) and after i have seen how many bases 2 week old wipe has i couldnt really understand how in this litterbox someone could enjoy playing. which is an issue to be addressed if we want to move towards no wipe policy. we need better decay system, and by better i mean harsh and stable. also i wont mention that my 970 i5 16gb ram had 10 fps moments every 2 minutes due to loading crap. some of us remember the version of experimental rust (around 2014-2015) where decay was kinda different. it would just start eating foundations the moment u placed them. it was cancer to repair every foundation but the whole deal kinda forced players to get at least 1 stone node once in a while in order to repair the base. right now, as long as you are online u can sit in your base for a whole day (as we can obtain food from planters now). its not healthy for player interaction.
then again, over the time, there were many many clean up suggestions, yet nearly every each one of them could backfire in some way. i really tried hard to think of something that would allow us to clean the map that couldnt be abused into oblivion, and while its not perfect, i think the gain would outweight the loss.
to achieve this goal i would greatly expand tool cupboard utility (every point of mine would be a single choice for "one" menu) and to allow everything to work we would have to come back to instant decay after placing object/foundation. i will explain it under **:
- toggle quick decay - in order to get rid of raided bases* you could toggle on/off the rapid decay on every foundation and deployable in the area of building priv. it would work for bases with multiple cupboards as the decay doesnt look for foundation id but for every object that has/hasnt build priv so on overlapping cupboards the alpha main mother cupboard would be the one that would do the decay. i think of something that would fully destroy the base within 12 hours. but this produce a problem i will explain under **
why this? its a balance between what we have now and if we would allow players to destroy walls in an area of the build priv (this one wont happen cause raiders would use it as a raiding tool
-
maintenance - hitting every piece of thing with a hammer is cancer. it is. thats why we would need an utility tool in a tool cupboard that would allow us to pay the whole decay cost in a one place. it would maintain everything in an area of build priv (would work only on decay, not on repairing the damage inflicted to the base, yet again **). in order to cover the whole base within 1 cupboard (so you could pay the cost of the whole compound in 1 place) we could link the cupboards. this leaves a room for mega exploits so its just an option
-
linking cupboards - by authorizing foundation IDs to your main cupboard. this wouldnt give you building priviledge on any other cupboard and wouldnt give you any benefit beside repairing the whole base/compound at once. just an utility tool, could be completely ignored as probably this one could backfire in some way
-
remotely authorizing friends - as we can share sleeping bags and beds. you COULD NOT see whos currently authorized as it would kill an aspect of the game (sneaky auth without owner knowing it). OR you could if devs want it this way but i highly doubt
-
storage - IMO the cupboard should have a storage space of a big box. i often find that i simply dont have enough space in my bases for gizmo such as water barrel for example which i would craft if my floor wasnt made of boxes. but its not just a QOL change as you need space to put your resources in, in order to repair decay damage. in this window you would also be able to see the whole resource requirement in order to repair the base. partial decay repairs would lead to exploits so i would roll with either paying the whole maintenance cost or nothing
" * " sorry for players who love to settle down in a raided base. i know its a feature but i can assure you that for 1 player like you, there are 50 who cannot play on the base overloaded server due to massive stutters. http://imgur.com/gallery/lr3DsKf
" ** " all this would be a ground to reintroducing old, harsh decay but with improvements. from now the decay would start the moment u place foundation/box/external or anything. instead of taking health points of that object there would be needed a new hit point meter (i will call it RUST meter) that would only take damage due to decay but was immune to anything else. this could be visible for everybody. RUST meter could be refilled by paying the whole base cost in cupboard or using a hammer. the hammer would always prioritise normal hitpoints on the leftclick before refiling RUST meter.
when RUST meter would hit 0, the object would either disappear (ez mode for devs) or be salvageable (hard mode for devs) ***.
" *** " this is a bonus. its an idea of leaving a base cleaning to players by giving them part of the resources that were used to build said base after pickaxing it. you can search this sub with keyword "salvageable bases" for more explanation.
couple of more points:
-
the whole decay on every object, doesnt matter if its an armoured wall or a campfire, would have to be generalised to, lets say 48 hours (to be balanced)
-
rapid decay would take around 12 hours to eat the whole RUST meter
-
i think 10-20% of the build cost of an object everyday would be a fair maintenance cost.
-
beside suggested "one" options, the cupboard would still has the options it has at the moment
-
decay wouldnt affect raiding. i find it a positive side. if you were away for time lower than, lets say 48 hours, you could still log in and refill RUST meter, so it actualy help casual players instead of hurting them as when base is half decayed its going to be raided as raid cost is lower.
-
every object not in build priv zone would be affected by rapid decay. mostly for killing pvp baricades and random campfires
PS: i post the thread after the patch went live, so everyone is probably playing now instead of lurikin reddit, so if the thread wont get any attention i will probably retoast it tomorrow (unless ull clearly tell me to stop with downvotes :D). also i might edit this thread later, if it is for more ideas or typos.
