Catching keyboard event in background and prevent them from propagating

Hello,

I got a barcode scanner that behaves like a normal keyboard. I would like to catch the keyboard events using a c/c++ program in background and prevent that events from being caught by other processes like the browser (because it starting having a very weird behavior). I don´t really know how to catch the barcode events and prevent them from propagate to other processes, any suggestions?

Note: I can´t really use POSIX since this is suppose to work on windows.
