[discussion] Do you give your dogs treats for no reason, or do you expect them to earn them?

One thing I read a lot before I got a dog is that one should always make the dog earn a treat - never give them one just because. This was usually in the context of the Nothing in Life is Free theory of dog ownership, but not always. Do you give your dogs treats just because, or is there typically something required of your dog to earn the treat?
