What have been your experiences of navigating college/university with cPTSD?
Hi all,
My name is Brooke and I'm currently a graduate student at UofL. I also have cPTSD. While I have not been terribly active on this subreddit, it has been a great source of solace and shared experience that I've been unable to find elsewhere. My own struggles with trauma and mental health care have led me to focus my thesis work on addressing the attitudes of universities towards (non-neurotypical) people with mental illness/mental disability. On that note, I would love to hear from those of you who wouldn't mind sharing (anonymously) their experiences in college/university institutions. I'm particularly interested in a) if you felt you were accommodated in any way (either through documentation or not) by your departments or professors, etc., b)what was your experience of class structures, c) how did the symptoms of cPTSD affect your college experience both in and out of class (so, academically and socially), d) If you told your professors about your cPTSD, how did they respond, e) If you told your college friends, how did they respond, f) anything else you feel would be helpful to share, etc. And I, of course, can share my own experiences with you all as well! I appreciate any feedback you feel willing to give. My hope is that gaining a larger sense of how we all navigate these institutions as a whole will help me tailor my studies to then impact positive changes in university policy.
Finally, I hope everyone is doing whatever they need to do for self care today :).
